Hello Again Resisters,
We Won! Rochester won! Thank you, thank you, thank you, for voting in the local town election. I was doing my happy dance when the results came in, hard to describe the feeling of joy, I hope you all felt it too. Kirsten won by 37 votes, Nate by 9. Even though Nate’s opponent has asked for a recount, I’m pretty confident the numbers won’t change by much at all. Recount is scheduled for this coming Thursday at 10 AM. Again, a huge thank you if you voted, displayed a yard sign, talked to like minded neighbors and friends and wrote postcards. One fine day in the future, when Rochester votes blue in national elections, I can finally die and go to heaven.
National:
The Big Bullshit Bill (BBB) is at the Senate. Republicans can only lose three Senate votes on this bill for it to fail. These senators are most vulnerable in 2026:
Collins (ME)
Tillis (NC)
Sullivan (AK)
Husted (OH)
Moody (FL)
Cornyn (TX)
Ernst (IA)
If you know anyone in these states, ask them to start making phone calls. Calling is by far the most effective way to ensure that your representative hears you before they take a public stance. A blast of phone calls can seriously disrupt a congressional office. Congressional staffers tally phone calls right away, instead of emails that have to be manually read and sorted. Same goes for letters and postcards.
This week 5calls.org lists 69 issues to call about. Many issues are portions of the BBB. If you have the time, please call about issues that matter most to you.
Every Wednesday and Thursday in June, 11:00am-12:30PM join Mass Indivisible for a phonebank to call voters and connect them directly to their Senator. They use Scale to Win, an easy to use calling tool.
State:
NSTR as we used to say back in the day. Nothing Significant to Report.
Local:
14 June, AKA No Kings Day is almost upon us. Hope to see the sidewalk by the Fairhaven High school packed from the High School to the bridge on RTE 6. Bring your flags and signs. Protest is from noon till 2 pm, I’ve also seen 3 pm, so it may go longer. It would be so nice if all the protests got more attention than the military parade. If out of town, search ‘50501” on your browser to find a demonstration near you. As of this writing, 1,600 No Kings events are scheduled for 14 June, across five continents, 10 countries and all 50 U.S. states. Side note: Best sign I’ve seen for this demonstration, “We don’t want any Faux King Tacos”
Those demonstrations you’ve seen at highway overpasses are coordinated by a movement called the “Visibility Brigades”. The movement was born in 2020 on an overpass in Paramus, NJ, out of frustration due to the lack of physical messaging in the real world. Stay tuned, we plan on working with the Mattapoisett Dems to stand on the I-195 overpass in Mattapoisett. Our goal is to have rolling demonstrations on the overpasses from Fairhaven to Wareham, this summer as Cape traffic picks up.
My Two Cents:
The last stroke of the hammer breaks a stone. This doesn’t mean that the first stroke is useless. Success is the result of continuous effort.
In my weekly emails I have outlined several ways we can resist and save our democracy. I’ll go over them again, since we get new emails added weekly to our mailing list. And quite frankly, I forget stuff and have to be reminded, therefore I think everyone else does too. Go to 5 Calls.org to easily contact senators and reps on issues you care about. Take small actions, follow Chop Wood, Carry Water for good news and to-dos. Buy Wisely, Make informed purchases using the Goods Unite US app. Stay tuned to our emails for local protests and rallies near you. We need all of you to plug in and hammer away.
One final thought, I did a big happy dance when Ukraine hit deep into Russia, hammering their Strategic Air Command aircraft with drones. I’m not sure if I was more in awe of the audacity of the operation, or that they kept it under wraps for so long. But Aces to Zelensky, he had a few cards up his sleeve.
Until next week, Hammer away.
