The Red Hat Initiative

The Norwegian red hat ( nisselue ) is a historical symbol of Norwegiannational identity and

patriotism. The red pointed hat with a tassel representsthe nisse, a mythical, mischievous gnome. The hat was a powerful, nonviolent form of resistance against the Nazi occupation during WWII, symbolizing cultural identity and providing a subtle visual declaration of defiance. Worn to boost morale and foster unity, it became so popular that the Nazi authorities outlawed the hat in 1942. The use of the hat was treated as a forbidden demonstration. Wearing such a hat would result in confiscation, fines, or even imprisonment. The symbol has recently resurfaced as a nod to that history and solidarity, inspiring protest “craftivism”. This has gained momentum in Minnesota as part of the “Melt the ICE” campaign. Our hope is to recreate that unity and declaration of defiance in our local communities. See how you can get involved! Make a hat. Buy a hat. ALL proceeds will benefit The Community Economic Development Center of New Bedford, helping our immigrant neighbors navigate tough times.
